CopyrighT

All images are © copyright. None may be reproduced by any process, nor may any other exclusive right be exercised, without the permission of the relevant author.

The Australian Copyright Council is a good resource for understanding your rights. This link takes you directly to the copyright information as it relates to photographers. You might want to browse elsewhere on the site.

Creative Commons License

Effectively, copyright is forever. You may not want that, in which case you might consider one of the Creative Commons Licenses which tell others how they can legally share your work. The CC licences set out the uses that may lawfully be made of the copyright material and specifies the conditions which must be complied with when it is used. Or, to build a license, jump straight to the nitty-gritty here.

Photographic organisations

There is a hierarchy of amateur photography organisations, from clubs to state to international and international. You might like to see what they offer. Click the blue text to be redirected to the organisation's website.

Signal

The Signal application is an encrypted messaging app used by millions of users around the world. The service uses your phone's internet connection to make calls and send SMSs, so you can freely install Signal without worries about your cellular plan's voice or data limits.

The app uses a strong and open-source encryption protocol to provide the users with secure communication. You don't need to give your number to contacts. Just exchange a one-time code to verify your identity.

Be aware that Signal app download is free, but your cellular carrier may charge you for sending and receiving messages.

Installation on mobile devices is via either the App Store or Play Store depending on your device. Once installed on your phone it can then be installed on your PC if you wish.

To install Signal on a PC or Mac etc. go here. Once installed on your phone it can then be installed on your PC to send images, messages etc. to all members of the group.

For use of the members, a group “Digital Nomads” has been set up. To access this group, the link is here. Any questions, please ask Paul O’Leary (paul.oleary@outlook.com or send a request to 0417 813 441

Photography the law and you

Street and Candid Photography

The Arts Law Centre of Australia website has a comprehensive information sheet on street photographer’s rights. Anyone who takes photos in a public place should peruse this article. Information sheets are free but other information or services have a charge. Costs vary from $0 to $100s.

This article written by an Australian solicitor from a photographer’s perspective is also a good resource. He states that it provides a view of the law relative to NSW, however, many of the references apply to Australia generally.

CONFUSED ABOUT THE LETTERS AFTER SOME MEMBER’S NAMES?

The “letters after your name” indicating photographic achievements are called Photographic Honours, unlike an academic degree or an honour such the Order of Australia, where the more general term Post-nominal is used. Photographic Honours are earned by entering national and/or international competitions.

Post-nominals

To receive an honour an individual must achieve a certain level of accomplishment by entering national and international exhibitions. In Australia the Australian Photographic Society (APS) manages this process and issues the honours. There are two categories of honour,
a) Skill (as in photographic skill) and
b) Service (as in service to amateur photography).

One must be a member of the APS to claim photographic honours.

Skill Honours issued by the APS in ascending order are:
Licentiate (LAPS and AV-LAPS where AV refers to Audio Visual)
Associate (AAPS and AV-AAPS)
Fellow (FAPS and AV-FAPS)
Master (MAPS and AV-MAPS)
Grand Master (GMAPS)
APS Exhibitor's Medal (APSEM)

Service Honours issued by the APS in ascending order are:
Service to APS (SAPS)
State Service to Photography (SSAPS)
Exceptional Service (ESAPS)
Honorary Fellowship (Hon FAPS)

There are other award systems

FIAP Distinctions are commonly seen. The International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) is an international organisation based in France which affiliates as operational members, the national associations of amateur photography world wide.

FIAP members count more than 85 national associations in the five continents and represents the interests of nearly one million individual photographers. The Australian Photographic Society (APS) is a member of FIAP and as such, manages applications for FIAP Distinctions from its members.

And then there’s the Photographic Society of America …

You can read more about Honours and Distinctions by clicking on this link.
